Getting started

What is 4 Rings?

4 Rings is a private journaling and life-planning app. You write a few minutes a day; a private, on-device AI interprets each sentence and scores it across four constructs — Personality, Character, Resources and Well-Being — and you confirm every interpretation and score. Over time it builds a validated personal dataset and a written analysis of how your own life works.

Which devices does it run on?

4 Rings is available for Mac (macOS Tahoe 26.3 or later) and as companion apps for iPhone and iPad. The Mac app is downloaded directly from 4rings.app; the iPhone and iPad apps are on the App Store.

How do I start?

Download the app, open it, and write your first entry — or use a guided prompt. There is no sign-up. On Mac you can try it free for 7 days; on iPhone and iPad the app is free to download with an in-app purchase to unlock the full version.

Purchases, trials & refunds

How much does it cost?

The Mac app is a one-time purchase — there is no subscription, and all future updates are included. The iPhone and iPad companion apps are free to download with a one-time in-app purchase to unlock. Education pricing is available for students and academics.

Is there a free trial?

Yes. The Mac app is free for 7 days, no card required. On iPhone and iPad, the app is free to download and includes a trial period before the unlock purchase.

How do I get a refund?

For iPhone and iPad purchases, refunds are handled by Apple through reportaproblem.apple.com. For a Mac purchase made on our website, email hello@4rings.app and we'll help.

Privacy & your data

Where is my data stored?

On your device. There is no account and no sign-up, and your journal is encrypted at rest. The AI that reads your entries runs entirely on your device — your writing is never sent to a cloud model.

Does anything sync to the internet?

Only if you turn on sync. Syncing across your own Apple devices is optional and runs through your iCloud as encrypted records, readable only by your copies of 4 Rings. With sync switched off, 4 Rings runs fully offline.

Can I export my data?

Yes. You can export your complete dataset as a CSV (with companion analysis code) at any time, from the Research tab. You own every figure.

Accounts, passcode & syncing

I forgot my passcode — can I get back in?

4 Rings is protected by a passcode you set. If you lose it, the app can fall back to your Apple ID as a failsafe, verified by your device. We never see your passcode or your data.

How do I use it across my Mac, iPad and iPhone?

Each platform is a separate app; install the ones you want. With iCloud sync enabled, your entries and data stay in step across your own devices automatically. Many people journal on iPhone or iPad and do the deeper analysis on the Mac.

Troubleshooting

The app won't open or behaves unexpectedly.

Make sure you're on a supported OS version, then quit and reopen the app. If the problem persists, email hello@4rings.app with your device and OS version and a short description, and we'll get you sorted.

I bought the app on a new device and don't see my purchase.

On iPhone and iPad, use Restore Purchases in the app's settings while signed in to the same Apple ID. For the Mac app, re-download from 4rings.app. If anything's missing, email us.
